Born shortly after the Nazis seized power in Vilnius in 1941, Shulamit Bastacky (1941-2021) was given to a Polish Catholic nun who successfully hid her throughout WWII and the Holocaust. Following liberation, Shulamit lived in Poland, Israel, then settled in Pittsburgh where she earned a degree in social work. Her passion for education, generosity, kind heart, and devotion to children made her one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved Holocaust survivors.
